THE SECRET way to remove STAINS from WHITE CLOTHES!
How do you remove stains from white clothes? We tested three different ways to make a dirty white sweater white again, and one came out the clear winner. So for the sake of learning, we’ll use my daughter’s white sweater that is covered in dirt, and we want it to be completely clean.
My daughter got dirt on her new white sweater and regular washing left a dingy area behind. I hoped not to have to toss it, so I tested methods to see which worked best. The internet is full of suggestions but they’re not equal. Some work better than others (and some don’t work at all). Regular washing didn’t work. So now I’m sharing what worked with you.

Here’s what we’ve tried and their results:
Method | Recipe | Instructions | Results |
---|---|---|---|
Method 1 | 1/2 cup ammonia 1/2 cup dish soap (like Dawn) 1/2 cup water | Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on muddy and stained white clothes. Then wash in your washing machine with regular detergent. | Removed some stains but left some spots |
Method 2 | 3 Tablespoons baking soda 1/2 Tablespoon water 1/2 Tablespoon hydrogen peroxide | Make it into a paste and spread it on the fabric with a toothbrush. Let sit in the sun or for at least 5 hours, then wash as usual. | Effectively removed stains |
Method 3 | OxyClean White Revive | Soak in OxyClean White Revive then wash as usual. | Removed some stains but left some spots |
Among the 3 methods, our baking soda hydrogen peroxide and water solution is the winner. It’s also inexpensive.

It brought the sweater back into its original color. I’m happy to report it’s been years since we made this video and she still LOVES her sweater. It’s as good as new!And this was also our magic solution when we tried to clean pee out of a mattress.
