This blog will show you how to get pee out of a mattress in 5 easy steps. We’ll also give some tips along the way, so this doesn’t happen again. So let’s get started!
What do you need?
- Hydrogen peroxide, preferably 3%.If you have a big stain or a lot of surface area to cover, invest in a large container of hydrogen peroxide.
- Baking soda
- Dishwashing liquid
- Essential oil like lavender (optional)
- A large-capacity spray bottle with the end nozzle removed. Beware If you use a low-cost sprayer, it WILL CLOG. If you have a filter on the tube, remove it, it will help. Otherwise, you’ll have to empty the solution onto the mattress.

- Plastic measuring spoons
- Funnel
- Vacuum cleaner or broom

Five steps process the pee stains out of your mattress.
Preparing the mixture
Note: Steps 1-3 go into your measuring cup
Step 1: Pour 8ounces of hydrogen peroxide
Step 2: Add three tablespoons of baking soda

Step3: Add a few drops of soap
OPTIONAL: 5 – 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
Step 4: Mix the solution until the baking soda is completely dissolved. Pour the solution into your spray bottle. It’s simpler to combine before adding directly into the spray bottle, but if there are clumps, that’s fine—spray pee spots with a fine mist. Make sure the surface is completely wet by spraying it all over. Don’t forget to spritz the edges or top as well!
Step 5: Allow the mattress to air dry. Remove any residue using a vacuum. Cordless handheld vacuums are fantastic. If you don’t have a vacuum, sweep the debris off with a broom instead.

What if you have a memory foam mattress?
This technique will work with any mattress with a cotton cover (or cotton-blend cover). It is possible that it won’t function on a polyester top since we have not tested it. If you have a memory foam mattress, spray the solution onto an inconspicuous area or put a cotton towel on top of the spot to ensure it doesn’t harm your mattress!
Does it work when dried urine stains?
Yes. It is the easiest way to get pee out of a mattress. You can also follow this for dried urine stains and vacuum up the residue once dry.
Now your mattress is all clean, and the pee smell is gone! You can use a mattress protector; otherwise, it will have to do more often than would want to.
Life happens, and we get it; for frequent issues like this, you might also consider an incontinence pad.
This method also works for other stains like period leaks, pet pee stains, etc.
