Stainless steel has been a popular choice for homeowners because of its sleek and modern look that goes great with a wide variety of decor. And its resistance to stains and germs appeals to the clean freak or germaphobe in all of us!

But the drawback is that stainless steel is also a magnet for fingerprints, smudges, water spots, and streaks. Even water can leave marks on their shiny surfaces. It shows every little fingerprint. Touch any stainless surface with less than clean, dry hands, and you’ll see it.

The problem is that you can get used to your stainless steel appliances looking just ok or not so great. I wipe the fridge handles several times a day and do the oven as needed but usually once a day. And then, I do a thorough weekly cleaning.

Each stainless steel appliance can be very different, even when made by the same company. So if you ask people how they clean their appliances, you often get all sorts of answers. But there’s a way that you can keep them looking like new.

The Basics on Cleaners for Stainless Steel

First, let’s discuss what doesn’t work. Avoid using harsh abrasives. They can leave dark spots on your stainless steel. Don’t use scouring powder, steel, wool, bleach, and ammonia because they can all damage the surface.

And, over time, even tap water can damage stainless steel. It can begin to rust, so we don’t recommend that either.

WD40 isn’t an excellent choice for stainless steel appliances because it’s unsafe for food surfaces. I’d leave it to its other uses! And, if you read the back label, there are all sorts of warnings, including: “Deliberate or direct inhalation of vapor or mist may be harmful or fatal.”. It does work, but for that reason, we prefer other methods.

Olive oil

Olive oil is another popular choice, and it does work. But if you use too much, it can get gummy and attract more dirt. And you have to work it in well, or it leaves a residue.

No matter what you use, Wipe With the Grain

Stainless steel has a grain or pattern (you have to look closely to see the direction of the lines). You’ll get the most shine if you wipe in the direction of the grain instead of against it. While you won’t ruin anything by wiping against the grain, it’s much less effective.

Weiman stainless steel spray

Our top pick for cleaning stainless steel is the Weiman Stainless Steel Spray. It is a highly rated and effective stainless steel cleaner. #1 Selling Stainless Steel Brand – the best-selling & most trusted stainless steel cleaning product.

Weiman Stainless Steel

The Weiman Stainless Steel Spray has a neutral pH formula that quickly cleans, shines, and protects stainless steel. It works on Black Stainless Steel, too – it leaves a protective barrier that prevents smears, dirt & smudges.

Where can you use it?

You can use it on your stainless steel refrigerator, microwave oven, stove (including the knobs), bbq grill, sink, range hood, stainless steel toaster, and trash cans.

And for best results, use it along with a microfiber cloth.
You spray directly onto the appliance and then use a microfiber cloth to buff it. It will make your stainless steel shiny and streak-free.

Stainless steel appliances are durable, and I think they look great, but they require regular cleaning. The key to keeping stainless steel “stainless” includes cleaning them more often than, you would say, a white fridge.

So if you have stainless steel to care for in your kitchen, it will take consistent effort, a great product, and a little work.
