So we’re going to get pee out of this memory foam mattress. It has a layer of latex on top, then memory foam. We had to test it. You have to be careful because memory foam is like a giant sponge, and the last thing you want is mold! This is a NEWER method that doesn’t clog up the spray bottle.Â
And I know you guys have kids or pets that wet the bed (or maybe you did because you got too drunk or something – don’t worry, it happens to the best of us), and that’s why you’re here, but let’s hear what happened here…
This was my friend Ronnie’s mattress and her kids peed on it – so there are urine rings on the mattress. Her husband was scared we were going to ruin their mattress, but we didn’t, which I knew the whole time.

How To Get Urine Out Of A Memory Foam Mattress Without Vinegar
Total Time 12 hours
1. Soak Up Any Fresh Urine
Dry towel to get liquid up if the pee is still wet. If it’s really bad, spray water on it and use a dry towel to soak it up. This is like a pre-treatment. We didn’t need to do that in this case, as the urine was already set and dried into the mattress.
2. Mixing The Urine Remover

In a measuring cup, mix together 8oz of hydrogen peroxide with a few drops of dawn dish soap. Stir well to combine. Once combined, add the mixture to your spray bottle.
3. Spray The Stain Remover On The Urine Spots

Now you’ll want to spray the peroxide mixture on the stains liberally. You don’t want to over-saturate it, but you do need to get the mattress damp.
4. Sprinkle The Baking Soda

Now that the mattress has been sprayed down, you want to sprinkle your baking soda on top. Not only does this help remove order and stains, but it is also absorbent, so it helps pull the liquid out while cleaning at the same time. You will want to rub the mixture into the mattress to create a paste.
5. Let The Baking Soda Paste Dry

All that is left to do is wait for the order and stain remover to work its magic on the urine stains. Using a household fan like this one can speed up this process! You’ll not need to rinse this off, and it not only cleans the stains but also removes the smell. Because we all know how stinky it can be.
Believe it or not, when we tore apart a mattress that had a lot of pee from a cat and dog on it, it only soaked into the top layer of the mattress. It doesn’t get deep inside. So by cleaning the top, you’re getting the most out of it.
Vacuum The Dried Baking Soda
Once the baking soda is dry and flakes, you’ll want to vacuum off the residue from the bed. If you don’t have a vacuum cleaner, that’s ok. Use a broom or dust off as much of the residue as you can with a cloth. And that’s it! Your memory foam mattress is now clean and free of pee stains and odor!
Drying the Mattress after cleaning
To dry the mattress, it’s best to throw the fans on full blast and let them do their thing. If you didn’t saturate the memory foam, they should dry within the day.
You can also put your mattress outside on a sunny day. It’s going to take some work if it’s a king-size, but we want to let them sleep on it that night, and it was summer, so that’s what we ended up doing in the video.
It took a few hours (3) for this mattress to dry with the fans pointed at the wet spots.

AFTER it’s cleaned…
Use a waterproof mattress protector so you don’t have to repeat this process. Coop Home Goods is our favorite mattress protector. Or, you can get a reusable incontinence pad if the stains are always in the same area. In this video, tested the Coop washable incontinence pad with 14 cups of liquid, including about 10 of those cups real pee, and it held perfectly.
Now, if you have a crazy household and you think the sides of your mattress might get peed on or stuff spilled on, I’m going to say you need one that’s waterproof on the sides too. For that, we recommend this 6-sided waterproof mattress protector. That means it covers the top, bottom, and all sides of the mattress.
Please share with your friends if they need to get urine off their mattresses!
Removing Urine From A Memory Foam Mattress FAQs
Does baking soda kill bacteria on the mattress?
Yes, it does! Not only is it great for deodorizing and wicking away moisture it kills bacteria by trapping it. In combination with the hydrogen peroxide, your mattress will be fresh smelling and sanitized!
Can You Steam Clean a Memory Foam Mattress?
Unfortunately, it’s not a good idea! While we love steam cleaners, they do admit a lot of water, something you don’t want to be absorbed into your mattress memory foam or not.
Memory foam mattresses, in particular, are so dense it takes a long, long time to dry – even if the surface appears dry, the foam itself may not be, which can breed mold and bacteria.
Can I use a carpet cleaning solution on a mattress?
We don’t recommend using a carpet cleaning solution on a mattress as it can damage it. They tend to be very concentrated and are made with the intent to clean tough (in most cases) nylon fiber, not delicate mattress foam and fluff.
